Cubist Heads

Creating a head piece in a cubist portrait style is a great way to introduce young artists to the radical art movement whilst teaching them about combining 2D and 3D forms. Cubism is one of the most influential art styles of the early twentieth century, challenging conventional forms of representation - such as perspective - which had been the rule since the Renaissance. Their aim was to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the modern age and incorporated optical theory and philosophy.

To create our cubist head we gave each of our students a box which they could fit over their heads. We looked through some famous Picasso portraits like The Weeping Woman for inspiration. We asked them to look at distorted perspectives and drawing facial features from different angles onto collaged cardboard.
